Liverpool Football Club Profile
Liverpool Football Club is one the best supported football club in England and in the world. It is based in Liverpool, hence its name but its support transcends any frontiers and football fans all over the world identify themselves with the club and proudly call themselves kopites, just like supporters based in Liverpool. They became even more popular when they won the Champions League in 2005 by beating AC Milan in dazzling fashion when they were severe underdogs: They came from 3-0 down and beat AC Milan on penalties. This conquered the hearts of football fans on all continents, and reminded other fans of the plush era of the 1970s and 1980s when Liverpool FC were the dominant force in England and in Europe.
Liverpool FC Dominated English And European Football For 2 Decades
Liverpool FC hold the record number of league titles, although that was equalled last year by their deadliest foes in football, Manchester United. They have long been England's most successful club, with 18 League titles, 5 European Cup (now rebranded as the Champions League), 7 FA Cups, 3 UEFA Cups (now the Europa League) and seven League Cups.
Liverpool FC plays in the English Premier League, also called the Premiership and this year, they are also involved in the Europa League.
Liverpool Football Club shares are currently owned by an American, John W. Henry, who has so far shown that he understands the spirit of the club - patience and support for manager, while having a healthy dose of respect for the supporters.
Bill Shankly Gave Liverpool Football Club Its Identity
LIverpool, as a football club, was defined by their first great manager, Bill Shankly, in the 1960s. He always believed that a football club only exist as long as the fans walk by it and he was revered by the supporters in return. His deepest wish was to make the club unbeatable and make the fans proud, while having the players play winning and attractive football.
Liverpool Football Club LFC motto is "You Will Walk Alone" which is also the club's anthem.
The team plays at Anfield, which has been their stadium and their home since 1892. The players train at Melwood, while there is a special academy to raise the young players.
Liverpool FC's nickname are the 'The Reds' and their supporters are called the 'Kopites'.

Current Liverpool Football Club LFC Star Players
Liverpool FC's best player is Steven Gerrard. He is a born leader, plays at a world class level and he has a few more years left in him at the top level. Hopefully, he will be able to drive the Liverpool Football Club team to sustained heights and win some more meaningful silverware, guide and nuture the next generation of Anfield superstars, and finally look in pride when his football career comes to a close.
Steven Gerrard - Born And Bred LFC Star
Steven Gerrard is the current Liverpool FC captain and one of the best players in the world. He plays in central midfield although he can play in virtually any position. His has such energy and drive that fans are lifted just by seeing him play. When he has the ball, Liverpool FC fans rise in expectancy, knowing that something can happen.
Steven Gerrard is a born and bred Liverpool Football Club LFC player. He joined Liverpool FC when he was 9 and through the years, his talent was evident and at 17 years old, he signed his first professional contract. His rose through the ranks like a fireball and burned his adversaries along the way with his all action action style. He was granted his premiership football first team debut by Gerard Houllier in 1998 and in the next few years he became a first choice for the team.
Liverpool Football Club LFC Have One Of The Word's Most Complete Players In Steven Gerrard
His strengths are his excellent technique, passing skills, abundant energy, drive, ability to score and tackling ability. He is the most complete player in the world. He is capable of playing right back as well as in midfield. In his career, he has played at right back, central midfield, defensive midfield, right midfield, left midfield, advanced midfield and second striker. He prefers to play in central midfield, although he is just as effective on the right or in an advanced position.
Steven Gerrard had always been an exceptionally talented player, a player so good that Liverpool FC's most hated rivals, Manchester United, wanted to buy him even when they knew that they did not have a chance. In fact, in successive years, it seemed that all the major clubs were after him. His will to win and his enormous stamina meant that he would cover every inch of the field, in his quest for defeating the other team. When Rafael Benitez took over, Steven Gerrard was almost the finished product but not quite. With the help of Rafael Benitez, he has learned to think more on the field and to channel his enormous talent to the most effective use. The result being that he won the biggest trophy in club football and he was twice voted as England's best footballer. Moreover, Benitez made him a prolific scorer, one challenging the strikers in the goalscoring charts.
Among the trophies that he won in his career are the UEFA Cup, the FA Cup twice and the League Cup twice. The icing on the cake has no doubt been the Champions League that he won in 2005, where Liverpool Football Club defeated AC Milan in extraordinary fashion. Check out the cool Steven Gerrard wallpapers .
On a personal note, he won the best young player award in 2001, UEFA's most valuable player in 2005, the PFA Player of the Year in 2006 and the Football Writers' Award in 2009. He also won an MBE for his achievements in sports.
Personal Stats: Steven Gerrard was born on the 30th May 1980, his height is 1m83, and his nationality is English. He currently wears the number 8 for Liverpool.
He was ever present on the international scene as well, playing for England regularly.
Unfortunately, he has been part of an underachieving team and the closest he has come to winning a trophy has been 2 quarter finals at the World Cup.

Thank You Fernando Torres
Update
Unfortunately, Fernando Torres has left Liverpool FC. He had been unsettled by Tom Hicks and Christian Purslow past actions, and it is understandable why he sought pastures new. There was nothing John W. Henry or Kenny Dalglish could have done about this. The good thing is that he only asked to leave once that Luis Suarez transfer was more or less sealed.
In this respect, I think that he deserves some credit and as Liverpool fans, we should all remember the fantastic time that he had at Liverpool FC and how much he contributed to the club.
Good luck Fernando.
Earlier Article
Fernando Torres is a spanish striker with a Liverpool heart, who now plays for the club that he supported as a child. He is a world class striker who is fiercely loyal. Prior to joining Liverpool FC, he had spent 12 years playing for his boyhood club, Athletico Madrid.
He was signed in July 2007 by Rafael Benitez for around £20 million and now this fee looks like a bargain. Though an international player, he had yet to fulfill his enormous talent completely when he joined Liverpool Football Club. Under his new manager's tutelage, he developed into one of the most feared strikers in the world. In his first season, he banged in 33 goals. In his second season, despite missing a large part of the season through injury, he scored 22 goals in 32 games, helping Liverpool FC to their best league points for more than 20 years.
In 2009, Manchester City tried to buy him for £70 million. Realistically though, his value is around the £50 million mark, his value having more than doubled since he joined the club.
For an striker of his calibre (he rivals Ian Rush as Liverpool's greatest striker ever), he has won no club trophies that is worth mentioning. He was desperately unlucky not to win the league with Liverpool Football Club LFC in 2009. He also came close in the Champions league and UEFA Cup when Liverpool FC were eliminated in the semi finals in 2008 and 2010.
Given his age, time is on his side though, and with the taking over of Liverpool FC by John W. Henry, he can be hopeful that he will win some major trophies in the next few years.
Personal Stats: Fernando Torres was born on the 24th of March 1984. He measures 1m85 for 78 kgs and his nationality is Spanish. He currently wears the number 9 for Liverpool.
On the international level, Fernando Torres has been much more successful with his trophy, having won the two greatest trophies with his national team. In 2008, he won the Euro 2008 and he scored in winning goal in the final against Germany. In 2010, he won the World Cup.

6 Fabio Aurelio
Fabio Aurelio originally originally signed for Liverpool Football Club in 2007, but he left the club in 2010 after failing to agree on a new contract. He was resigned in 2010 by Roy Hodgson who had just been confirmed as Liverpool FC manager.

Steven Gerrard has been at the club since he was nine. An exceptional player, who can play in almost all the positions, he has captained the club since 2002. His extraordinary impact both on the team's performance and results means that he is vital to Liverpool FC's future. He is a world class player.
9 Andy Carroll
Andy Carroll could be described as a better Peter Crouch. He is stronger and more athletic than he is and he can be unplayable when he hits top. He is probably one of the best strikers when it comes to the heading ability. One day, he could become the best striker in the world in that respect.
10 Joe Cole
A former youth prodigy of the West Ham academy, Joe Cole enjoyed immense success with Chelsea before signing for Liverpool FC on a free transfer in 2010.
12 Daniel Pacheco
Daniel Pachecho is a product of Rafael Benitez youth policy. He was signed from Barcelona as a teenager and nurtured through the Liverpool Reserves. Tipped to be a talent for the future, he is on the brink of breaking in the Liverpool team.

17 Maximiliano Maxi Rodriguez

18 Dirk Kuyt
Dirk Kuyt is a tireless forward dutch player, who has been compared to a Duracell bunny, by Rafa Benitez, his former manager. He has incredible stamina and always gives his best for Liverpool FC. While he performed successfully as a striker in his days in the Eredivisie, he selflessly transformed himself as a right winger for Liverpool, popping in the opposition's boxes on important occasions to score goals.
19 Ryan Babel
A Dutch player who played well for the national team as a left sided striker, Ryan Babel has yet to confirm his enormous potential for Liverpool FC. He has been the club's best-scoring substitute for a few seasons nonetheless.
21 Leiva Lucas
When he signed for Liverpool Football Club in 2007, Lucas Leiva had just won Brazil's best player award. He is a midfield player, who can run box to box, but who is best used as a defensive midfielder.
22 Danny Wilson
Danny Wilson is a young defender who signed for LFC in 2010 from Rangers.
23 Jamie Carragher
Jamie Carragher rose through the ranks at Liverpool FC until he reached the first team. While Gerrard Houllier gave him his debut, he was transformed by Rafael Benitez when the latter came to the club and recognized his potential. He was no longer considered a utility player but was turned into one's of England and Europe's finer defenders.
24 David N'Gog
A young french player, David N'Gog, signed for Liverpool Football Club in 2009 from PSG. He is a striker who has the potential to score goals regularly for the club in the future.
25 Jose Manuel Reina
A goalkeeper by trade, Jose Manuel Reina, is not a typical goalkeeper. He was snapped from Villareal in 2006 and he won the Golden Gloves award season after season for Liverpool FC. considered a penalty specialist back in his days in Spain, he is an excellent goalkeeper who likes to anticipate situations, is agile and is as comfortable with his hands as with his feet. His ability to launch counter attacks as soon as he gets the ball is atypical for a goalkeeper and makes a attacking threat. He was famously invited to play as a substitute outfield player in preseason friendly game a few years back. His age and capability means that one day he can mature into one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He is essential for Liverpool Football Club LFC's future plans
26 Jay Spearing
Jay Spearing is a young player who comes from the academy. He is a midfield player with potential but he is yet to show that he can perform for Liverpool FC on a regular basis.
28 Christian Poulsen
Christian Poulsen was bought for £5 million in 2010 from Juventus. While he was a good player in his earlier years, Liverpool FC fans have yet to understand why the club paid so much for a player who is around 30, and who up to now has not been able to adapt to the speed of the Premier League. Moreover, they are aghast that Alberto Aquilani was sent on a free loan to Juventus. Aquilani has been one of their better players this season.
33 Jonjo Shelvey
Jonjo Shelvey is a young english player who was bought by Liverpool FC in 2010. He plays in central midfield and his style is similar to that of Steven Gerrard. If he can develop into a player half as good as the Liverpool FC captain, then the club would have a hell of a player on their hand.

Liverpool Football Club LFC Club History
Birth Of Liverpool Football Club
Liverpool Football Club was formed by John Houlding in 1892. It all started when Everton left Anfield (where they were playing) due to a rent dispute. John Houlding and his friends, who split from Everton, created Liverpool FC. The name 'Liverpool FC' was a suggestion of William. E. Barclay, who sensibly thought that it was an appropriate name since they were playing in the city of Liverpool. Liverpool Football Club have been playing at Anfield ever since its creation.
The 1892-1914 Period - Liverpool FC
- 2 League Titles
Liverpool FC won their first game ever in 1892. A year later, they won their first league game and in1894, they won their Promotion at their 1st attempt. Two years later, in 1896, they achieved their record victory, the same year that Tom Watson arrived as manager. In 1901, he guided them to their 1st League Title Victory, where they were crowned as Champions. In 1906, Tom Watson worked his magic again and LFC won their 2nd League title. In 1914, Liverpool FC reached their 1st FA Cup Final.
The 1915-1958 Period - Liverpool FC
- 3 League Titles
- Billy Liddell
- Lowest Point: Relegation
In 1922, under the guidance of manager David Ashworth, Liverpool FC won their 3rd league title, a feat that they would repeat one year later, by winning back to back titles. It was a proud moment for the Reds, the players, the manager and the supporters. In 1928, there was a major development at Anfield, where part of the stadium was covered. No more rain for the Kop!
A fifth league title was on the table for the for the Reds in 1947, when they swept aside the other teams. Unfortunately, they were less fortunate in the FA Cup, when they suffered in the final in 1950. This did not stop the Anfield faithful from coming back, and in 1952, they established a new crowd record at Anfield.
Billy Liddell - Liverpool FC Loyalty Flowed In His Blood
Then came the bleakest period in Liverpool Fc's history: they were relegated in 1954 from the first division and they suffered a record defeat in the same year. For the next eight years, they would plough in the dark and play against teams far less glamourous that them in the lower division. Their shining light was a player called Billy Liddell. He was an excellent player who belonged to the top flight, but out of loyalty to the Reds, he stuck with them. He dazzled the crowds with his technical ability and many Liverpool FC's fans would turn up just to see him.
The Shankly Era (1959-1974) - Liverpool FC's Soul
- Appointment of Bill Shankly
- 3 League Titles
- 2 FA Cup
- 1 UEFA Cup
By 1959, the Liverpool team had still not been promoted and a humiliating defeat against the amateurs of Worcester were the last straw. A change of football leadership was desperately needed and it happened. The Liverpool Football Club's board made the greatest decision in the history of the Liverpool FC. Bill Shankly was appointed as manager. From there on, things went from good to better, and the Reds became stronger by the day. From 1959 to 1962, Bill Shankly rebuilt everything around the club, from the training ground to their footballing philosophy. He recruited the best players that he could find and he built a team that would challenge for honours for years to come, even when they were still in the 2nd division.
The Rise Of Liverpool Football Club LFC
From Promotion To League Title In 2 Years
It was inevitable. An irresistible Liverpool Football Club were promoted from the Division 2 in 1962 and regained their place among the elite. 2 years later, with a few adjustments, Shankly's team swept the others aside and claimed the Division 1 Tile for the 6th time (1964). The next season, The Reds participated in the European Cup for the 1st time. The same year, Liverpool Football Club LFC started to play in their all-red kit, which they still do to date. Bill Shankly famously compared one of his players to a giant when he saw him in his in the all red kit, and he swiftly adopted the new colour. As ever a forward thinking manager and well in advance on his time, Bill Shankly was already thinking about the mental effect that the new kit would have on the opposing team.
Liverpool FC Robbed Of Their First European Cup Final
In Europe, it seemed that it would be Liverpool FC's year. Unfortunately, they were subject to a poor refereeing in the semifinal against Inter Milan and they lost over two legs. Ths is being kind to the referee. If a referee had performed so poorly nowadays, he would probably be demoted or banned, with accusations of match-fixing flying around. So the Reds suffered defeat when they deserved to win.
LFC's First FA Cup
However the year was going to end in joy and jubilation. The defeat against Inter Milan would be almost forgotten at the end of the season. In 1965, Shankly's boys won the their first FA Cup. This was the trophy that they were hoping for 73 years. For most Liverpool FC fans of the time and most other teams' fans, the FA Cup was the most important trophy after the League Title. It was the trophy that made children and adults dream alike and united them in their quest to see their team lifting the Cup.
Having won the FA Cup, Liverpool FC qualified for the Cup Winner's Cup in the following season. They did everything almost perfectly, but they lost in the final in 1966. Heart break for the Reds, but a valuable experience earned. In the League, they played with the maturity of a team accustomed to domestic success and they won their 7th League Title. For the next 5 years, the Reds played well, they came close to winning the league, but ultimately they finished just short. Sometimes a team needs to take 1 step back to jump two steps forward.
Bill Shankly's Second Great Liverpool FC Team
What Bill Shankly was also doing was he was rebuilding his Liverpool team. Brillant Players like Kevin Keegan were signed. After excelling for Liverpool Fc for a number of years and turn into a world class player, he would later go to Hamburg and would win World Player of the Year 2 years in a row.
So Bill Shankly was clearly somebody who had an eye for talent.
Led by Kevin Keegan and a number of excellent players, Liverpool Football Club reconquered their league title 1973. By then, the title counter was showing eight. Moreover, in the same, year Shankly captured the first european trophy for Liverpool FC in the form of the UEFA Cup. Next year, in 1974, more trophies were to follow in the form of The Reds' second FA Cup.
Voluntarily or involuntarily, Bill Shankly had been grooming the next generation of Liverpool FC managers when he set up the famous Boot Room and surrounded himself with some of the greatest tactical minds around. Bob Paisley, his assistant, was the finest of them all.
Bill Shankly's Resignation - The Day The World Nearly Came To An End For Many Liverpool Football Club LFC Fans
His beloved liverpool FC team were playing the like the champions that they were and were back on the trophies-winning track. So far so good for the liverpool fc manager. It was at the peak of his career that Bill Shankly decided to resign in 1974. The news had the effect of a nuclear bomb on Liverpool FC's fans: the were annihilated. They knew how much Liverpool Football Club and they, the supporters, meant to Bill Shankly, and the they reciprocated that affection. Life without him was unthinkable. It looked like Liverpool FC would come to an end and there seemed to be no future. Perhaps it was the desire to spend more time with his wife which made Bill Shankly resigned, or maybe it was because he had finally brought more trophies to Liverpool FC and decided that it was better to leave now while he was at the top. He had given the club an identity as well as many trophies. It is probably this identity that will be is greatest legacy. He had not just changed the club, he had an impact on football in general.
So after 15 years, hereby closed an extraordinary chapter in Liverpool Football Club LFC's history. He was the man who made Liverpool FC more than just a club and he made the club truly special in the eyes of the football world. Everything that would be achieved in the future takes root in what he did. He gave the club its soul.
Bill Shankly Video - A Tribute to Liverpool FC's greatest manager
The Paisley Era (1974-1983) - Liverpool FC's Most Successful Manager
- 6 League Titles
- 3 European Cups
- 1 UEFA Cup
- 3 League Cups
Still battered by Bill Shankly's resignation, Liverpool FC supporters woke up one day to the news that Bob Paisly, Bill Shankly's assistant, had taken over at Anfield. While they carried him in their hearts for all the years of loyal service, first as a player, then as an assistant manager, there were still many who doubted whether he could continue Shankly's legacy. He could and he could not. He could and he bettered the former manager's trophy haul and won over the hearts of all the Liverpool FC's fans. However, he could not replace Bill Shankly personality. Nobody in the world could and nobody has ever since. Bill Shankly was unique and still is today, many Liverpool fans think of him as their greatest manager even if other managers have won more trophies than he did in a shorter time.
Bob Paisley - Liverpool Football Club's Quiet Genius
As it would emerge, if Bill Shankly was the heart and drive behind Liverpool Football Club's rise to power, Bob Paisley was the brains. Personality wise, he was the opposite of Shankly: He was introverted and fled from the limelight, but he was a fantastic tactician who managed his players in a fair and no-nonsense way. It emerged that he had refused the job at first and had only reluctantly accepted at the insistence of the Liverpool Fc's board. It was also suggested that Bill Shankly had recommended Jack Charlton instead of his former assistant. There are two ways to look at this. First, that Bill Shankly had more confidence in Jack Charlton's ability. Or Second, he acknowledged Bob Paisley's ability but that he knew that Bob Paisley did not want the job,and that it was pointless to recommend him to the board since he would refuse anyway.
Bob Paisley inherited an excellent team and a genius of a player in Kevin Keegan. His Liverpool Football Club career as a manager started rather well with the Charity Shield penalty shoot-out victory. His team played some good football during his debut season and sometimes, they played outstandingly as witnessed by the 11 goals that they scored in a particular game. At the end of the season, which was a blending season for Bob Paisley, he failed to manage any major trophy, but the performance of the team on the field was clear to everybody. And thus as any decent manager should deserve, he was given the necessary time to get it right. He turned out to be most successful Liverpool FC manager ever. He has won more trophies than any other English manager as well.
1976 & 1977 - 2 League Title, UEFA Cup And 1st European Cup For Liverpool FC
The trophy accumulation started in 1976, when Liverpool FC won their ninth title. The same year, they clinched their 2nd UEFA Cup. He would not have much of a chance to win any more of these, since his team would be mostly in the European Cup from then on! The following season started with a Charity Shield victory against Southampton and finished with a tenth league title as well as a first European Cup victory (1977). That summer also saw the departure of Kevin Keegan, probably one of the best players in the world at that time.
In his place came 26 year old Kenny Dalglish from Celtic. While Kevin Keegan had the grace and creativity of a ballet artist, Kenny Dalglish had the mind and intelligence of a nuclear scientist. Everything seemed to flow in slow motion for him, so he was always ahead of the opposition. Kenny Dalglish would turn out to become Liverpool FC's greatest player. While Bob Paisley was the general directing things from the dugout, Dalglish was the commander on the field.
1978 - 1983 - 4 League Titles, 2 European Cups & 3 League Cups For Liverpool Football Club LFC
At the end of the 1978 season, the Reds had clinched their successive European Cup at Wembley when they Bruges. In 1979, a victory at Aston Villa enarned them their 11th League Championship. More of the same in 1980 as they won another league title. In 1981, they finally won their 1st League Cup and they in 1982, they retained the trophy. Moreover, they won their 13th league title . Third straight league cup victory in 1983 and the victory is made extra as they beat Man Utd in the final. Moreover, there is a 13th league victory on the horizon for the Reds as they win their 14th League title.
The time had come for Bob Paisly to bid fairwell to the manager's job and he stepped up to the Liverpool Football Club's board. A totally deserved position. If only Bill Shankly had been offered the same priviledge...
The club owed Bob Paisley that. Maybe the board had learned from its mistakes.

The Fagan Era (1984-1985) - A Talented Liverpool FC's Manager
- 1 League Title
- 1 European Cup
- 1 League Cup
Without breaking sweat and the boot room successful tradition firmly in place, Liverpool FC stormed to a treble in 1984 with Joe Fagan in charge. They won the league cup, league title and the European Cup against Roma in Rome. Liverpool Football Club were at the top of the world.
Unfortunately, the following season would be remembered as a season of tragedy. Beaten by Juventus in the European final in Heysel, a small group of hooligans attacked the Juventus supporters and killed a few. This was the say that this small group of madmen gave the knowledgeable Liverpool Football Club's supporters a bad name. The majority of Liverpool FC fans were aghast.
Liverpool F.C. were rightly banned for 5 years from European competitions and Joe Fagan stepped down. He was an honourable man who knew that he had to take responsibility, though no fault of his own.

The Dalglish Era (1985-1991) - Liverpool's Inspirational Player-Manager
- 3 League Titles
- 2 FA Cups
Kenny Dalglish became player-manager for the club, a natural stepping stone for this intelligent man, and one years later in 1986, Liverpool won their first double - the League Title and FA Cup in the same season. In 1988, Liverpool clinched another league title against Tottenham, their 17th, although there was heartbreak in the FA Cup final.
1989 would become the darkest day in the history of Liverpool as the many Liverpool fans were crushed in at Hillsborough when a football fence collapsed. This led to the ultimate removal of all fences from all stadiums in the UK. This disaster severely affected the liverpool players and especially Kenny Dalglish. Footballing wise, they were beaten in the last minute to the league by a injury-time goal by Michael Thomas for Arsenal. In the FA Cup, there was better luck as a Rush double sealed the victory.
In 1990, the Reds stormed to their 18th and last title, and King Kenny, as he was affectionately called, had taken them to where they belonged. However, he was not feeling well psychologically, the Hillborough disaster having taken its toll. In 1991, he resigned.

The Souness Era (1991-1994) - The Sour Liverpool FC Era
- 1 FA Cup
Kenny Dalglish was replaced by Graeme Souness, fresh from his success in Scotland with Rangers. When he came to Liverpool FC, he dismantled the best team in the league, and replaced it with players that fit his own personality. At first, it looked like he knew what he was doing but results rapidly dwindled in the league. The season was saved by a victory in the FA Cup in 1992. The next 2 years would be excruciating for LFC as they saw their most bitter enemy, Manchester United, become the dominant force in England, together with the self destruction from within by their own manager.
Results and performances were so bad for Liverpool Football Club that Graeme Souness was sacked midseason in 1994. He was first Liverpool FC manager to be dismissed in 35 years. That's how bad things during his managerial's reign.

The Evans Era (1994-1998) - Champagne Football For Liverpool FC
- 1 League Cup
A honest lad who had risen through the boot room, Roy Evans was a decent manager. He was appointed as Liverpool FC manager in 1994. He managed to win the League Cup in 1995 and guided the Reds to the FA final in 1996. He had assembled a talented team who played arguably the best football in the League. However, they fell short in the end
His Liverpool FC team lacked the discipline, winning mentality and killer instinct. Roy Evans, the nice manager, could not bring himself to crack down on them. Their league standings were still reasonable though and they were playing much better than through the Souness years.

The Houllier Era (1998-2004) - Defensive But Winning Football For LFC
- 1 FA Cup
- 1 UEFA Cup
- 2 League Cups
David Moores had inherited the LFC team in the early 1990s and as Chairman, he recruited Rick Parry in 1998. Rick Parry was the Chief Executive of the Premier League since its conception in 1992 and being an avid Liverpool FC fan, he gladly accepted the proposal to join Liverpool Football Club.
Rick Parry lacked the proper knowledge and motivation to set up a successful marketing campaign and raise revenue. Moreover he alienated the Liverpool FC football supporters with some of his blunt comments when tact was needed. He did not pay much attention to what fans said and he did not properly defend the supporters' feelings when the Premier League asked the club to play an away game on the Hillsborough anniversary day. Moreover, many supporters thought that the way he dressed made him look like a clown. Maybe they had a point there. Nonetheless, he was a football man, meaning that he understood tactics and the true value of a manager. During his tenure, Liverpool FC experienced some great footballing memories, always improving on the field and they brought home some nice trophies.
Liverpool Football Club LFC - The First Joint Managers
Gerard Houllier, a relatively successful overseas manager was recruited to assist Roy Evans, and first joint managerial team in English football was born. Although the pair looked like they could work together, this partnership was doomed to failure right at the start, since both had the same power over player selection, player recruitment and player management. For example, they frequently disagreed when to make a substitution during the course of a match and what player to change, and the Liverpool FC team was left in limbo. Midway though the season, Roy Evans left and Gerard Houllier was left in sole charge of the team.
It is interesting though that Liverpool Football Club had not just dismissed Roy Evans at the start of the season and replaced him straight away with Gerard Houllier. This is what made Liverpool FC special. They showed patience when a manager is performing decently and gave him the time to succeed.
Although Gerard Houllier footballing style was less attractive, he instilled discipline in the squad, he improved the training facilities and introduced a healthier off-field culture at the football club.
Liverpool FC - 3 Trophies In 2001
Trophy-wise, Gerard Houllier only started to shine in 2001, but the fans were ever patient since they saw that he improved the team and gave them more of a winning mentality. 2001 was a fantastic year for Liverpool FC. The team included talented players like home-grown players Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and a very young Steven Gerrard, while very good players like Dietmar Hamann had been signed and were performing very well. Gerard Houllier "coup de maitre" was the signing of Gary McAllister at the beginning of the season. McAllister was into his thirties but he had one last big challenge in him and he did just that at Liverpool Football Club. A leader by nature, he was also very experienced, and he drove the LFC team to victory, organising and encouraging the younger players on the field.
Houllier's Heart Attack - You'll Never Walk Alone Gerard
The club finished a good 4th in the league and qualified for the Champions League, but the real glory was in the 3 cup finals that Gerard Houllier masterminded. The Liverpool FC team reached the League Cup Final against Birmingham, the FA Cup Final against Arsenal and the UEFA Cup Final against Alaves, and won all of them. 3 trophies and an epic final in the UEFA Cup - they beat Alaves 5-4 to claim the UEFA Cup.
Gerard Houllier stock was at an all-time high and Liverpool FC fans were revelling in their good fortune. Football, though, is a very high tension profession for managers - they have to control their emotions to be able to make the best decisions on the field and this tension can eat them from the inside. This is unfortunately what happened to Gerard Houllier: He suffered a heart attack the next season and fortunately, he survived. Every Liverpool Football Club supporter was praying for him and the unanimous consensus was that the managerial job should be reserved for him for as long as he took to recover.
The Liverpool FC board recognised Gerard Houllier's achievements and ability, and they placed his assistant, Phil Thompson, in charge while he was recovering. Under Phil Thompson tutelage, the team continued their good form, with both players and staff doing their best for their manager.
Gerard Houllier Returns To Liverpool Football Club
A few months later, he was back, but it was a case of too much, too soon. While the supporters were glad to see a familiar face in the dugout, Gerard Houllier did not look his old self and he started making some bizzare tactical decisions. This was confirmed in the quarter finals of the Champions League. He withdrew a defensive midfield player and threw in an attacking player while the Liverpool FC team was in front. Usually, a manager would defend the lead there. As predicted, the opposing team (Bayer Leverkusen) quickly equalised and eventually booted the Liverpool Football Club LFC team out of the Champions League. In the league, Liverpool FC finished 2nd with a very good 80 points, a record high for more than a decade.
2002 appeared to be the stepping stone for something better in the league, but the Liverpool Football Club fans were already getting the a slight impression that things were going downhill. Of course, most of them wished that they were wrong and that soon, the real Gerard Houllier would show up. In the transfer market, things started to turn sour as well. Up to then, whenever Gerard Houllier had spent any sizeable sum of money, he had bought quality players like Dietmar Hamann and Jerzy Dudek. Even Emil Heskey was money well spent when he was signed. The manager had also brought some excellent bargains, eg Sami Hyppia. During the 2002 and 2003 transfer market, he spent some sizeable transfer money on players like El Hadji Diouf, Salif Diao, Bruno Cheyrou and some others. They were never to the Liverpool FC standard.
2 Years Of Stagnation For Liverpool FC
In 2003 and 2004, the team were a pain to watch, the manager seemed to have lost the plot (he could not make the right decision under pressure), sub quality players had been brought in for exorbitant fees, and results were quite poor. Trophy-wise, Liverpool FC only managed to manage to win the League Cup in 2003 and the team were regressing in the league.
He lost the support of the Anfield faithful and fans were calling were for his head in 2003. However, one poor season does not mean that a manager is bad, since anyone can have a poor season. The Liverpool FC board showed patience and gave him one more season to show that he can succeed. They have to be applauded for that. For a manager to excel, he needs that kind of support.
Unfortunately, the 2004 season was not much better, although the Liverpool Football Club team managed to qualify for the Champions League by the scrape of the neck. The team was stagnating and some would say they were regressing. The writing was on the wall and the time for a change had come.

Who Is The Man Who Made Real Madrid And Barcelona Tremble?
The Spanish league was in a state of shock. Valencia, a good but unfancied club, had just stormed to its 2nd La Liga title in 3 years, and Real Madrid and Barcelona, the traditional Spanish football giants had been overshadowed. The man responsible for these events was a previously unknown manager called Rafael Benitez. He was being acclaimed as a hero in Spain (he had also just won the UEFA Cup), but things were not going well for him. There were severe friction with the Valencia directors and the situation had become untenable for him.
Rafael Benitez - The Most Charismatic Liverpool FC Manager Since Bill Shankly
Enter Liverpool FC who offered him an escape route. Come to Liverpool Football Club, to Premiership football and to England - here the head coach is not just a coach, but the manager of the team, he has greater freedom and responsibility, and LFC would offer him freedom and peace of mind to work, and they would support him in the transfer market to the extent that their budget permitted them to do. For a man like Rafael Benitez, this was irresistible. A workhaholic, he craved peace of mind and a healthy working environment more than anything.
Rafa, as he affectionately known to liverpool fc fans, was appointed in the summer of 2004. He inherited a newly arrived Djibril Cisse, a good striker but who was bought for twice his price by the former manager. He lost his best striker in Michael Owen, though to no fault of his own, and he brought in the technically gifted Xabi Alonso, and the creative but hard working Luis Garcia with the serious money that he had in his transfer chest. Both of them would prove to be huge successes for Liverpool Football Club. In his 1st season, Rafa propelled the Reds to a League Cup final, which they lost. In the league, they performed adequately although they managed only to finish at a disappointing 5th place, which meant no qualification in the Champions League through a league position.
The Miracle Of Istanbul
Liverpool FC Rise To Dominate AC Milan And Conquer The Hearts Of Football Fans All Over The World
In the Champions League, the Liverpool FC team performed beyond expectation. Nobody was giving them a prayer to go beyond the quarter finals: they reached the final and won it! They eliminated European giants like Juventus and AC Milan along the way, as well as the unstoppable Chelsea. In the final, they played AC Milan, and in what would be remembered as one of the greatest Champions League finals of all time, they came back from 3-0 down, when everyone thought that they were dead and buried, and beat AC Milan on penalities. The 1st half was a disaster, the Liverpool Football Club LFC team had fallen to 3 lightning quick goals and were 3-0 down. The Liverpool FC fans, shattered and bruised in the stands mustered their inner and showed what Liverpool Football Club is about. They sang the "You'll Never Walk Alone" song as support to their team and they showed them that they were proud of them. There are very few fans in the world who would have done that at 3-0 down
How do you come back from that when you are playing one of the best teams in the Champions league? By withdrawing a defender and throwing on a defensive midfielder! In 6 minutes, Liverpool whipped AC Milan with 3 goals and equalised in the most incredible fashion. Opposition supporters and neutral football fans all looked at the score in disbelief. 3-3. What the hell jad just happened!? Liverpool FC fans were shell-shocked as well, but they were too busy rejoicing and bouncing around to notice. But it was far from over. The AC Milan team threw everything that they could at a weaker Liverpool team, but Liverpool FC were tactically superior on the day and they held on to go to the penalties. There, the theatrics of their goalkeeper and the cooler heads of the LFC players eventually reigned supreme and they eventually won.
Liverpool FC had done it! They were the 2005 Champions of Europe! On a personal note, Steven Gerrard was named as the Champions League's Most Valuable Player.
Liverpool FC Reputation Restored
To be recognised as a force in Europe, a club has to either win the the League title in their respective league (it has to be a major league) or win the Champions League. Liverpool FC had won neither of them for 15 years. By winning the Champions League in 2005, Rafa Benitez restored Liverpool Football Club's reputation in Europe. For the years to come, his team would draw gasps from any opposition team that would come their way, particularly in Europe.
2006 - Liverpool FC Wins FA And Finish With 82 Points In The English Premiership
Liverpool Football Club LFC wins TEN consecutive games, marched to an FA Cup Victory and closed the league with 82 points (the best for 20 years).
In 2006, there was major improvement in the league, with the Liverpool FC team finishing 2nd with 82 points. They surpassed the 80 points of Gerard Houllier's team a few seasons away. There was a stretch in the season when they won 10 games in a row. They won the FA Cup as well, which meant that Rafa had brought 2 major trophies for Liverpool in 2 successive seasons. Steven Gerrard won best england's best footballer award by playing in an unfamiliar role on the right, and the FA Cup Final was nicknamed at the 'Gerrard's' final due to the magnificent role that he played.
A Second Champions League Final In 3 Years - Other Top Teams Were Now Afraid Of Liverpool FC
In 2007, the Livepool Football Club LFC team focused their energy on the Champions League, while ensuring that they finished in the Top 4 (they comfortably finished in 3rd position). They reached the Champions League Final where they met an old foe in AC Milan. AC Milan were still licking their wounds from their previous encounter of 2 years back, they had revenge on their mind and they knew not to underestimate Liverpool FC. Contrary to 2 years ago, Liverpool FC were the dominant force in Europe in 2007: they had brushed aside any opposition on their way to the final. The 2006 Champions League winners, Barcelona, were totally dominated and some of their players whined how it is unfair to play against a team like Liverpool FC, who "doesn't play real football". This statement came from Lionel Messi, the prodigy who was excellent back then and would soon become the best footballer in the world. In the semi final, they beat Chelsea on penalties in what was a confident performance.
In the final, the Liverpool FC team were superior to the AC Milan team, and they took the game to them, dominated the 1st half and pegged them back. Unfortunately for Liverpool Football Club, AC Milan scored with a deflected Free kick and they started defending more. The had learned their lesson. It was difficult for Liverpool FC to break a team of AC Milan calibre when were they defending so well and looking for the killer goal on the counter attack. Finally, Rafael Benitez had to gamble with an attacking player. He didn't seem to want to do that and with reason. A goal for his team could come from a set piece or from an error from the opposition. But conceding a second goal for would mean disaster. He took the gamble of introducing a striker and within minutes his fears were confirmed. AC Milan scored a second goal on the counterattack. Now the Milan team were not just defending, they camped all their players in their own half and defended their 2 goal lead stoutly. Ironically, Liverpool FC scored a goal in the 87th minute on a corner. One can only imagine what would have happened if LFC had played more conservatively when 1 nil down and they had scored they scored that goal. They would have equalised and then who knows?. It is difficult to blame Benitez though. He had foreseen AC Milan strength on the counter attack, but he was almost forced to make a change.
So heartbreak for Liverpool FC but real disaster had occurred earlier in the season. George Gillette and Tom Hicks had bought Liverpool FC shares. While George Gillette initially looked like a decent owner from his Montreal Hockey team ownership, he was always playing 2nd fiddle to Hicks and in the end was forced to side with him. In the next 3 years, Hicks crushed Liverpool Football Club's culture and adopted the Divide And Rule Concept. He sweet talked Rafa against Gillette and Parry, and plunged Liverpool Football Club LFC into debt. Bad economic conditions meant that the stadium could not be built as well.
Rafa's Transfer Decisions - Good Buys When He Had The Right Money
Transfer wise, Rafa made some good decisions. In January 2007, he loaned in Javier Mascherano who was out of form, but would prove himself to be World Class Midfielder. In the summer of 2007, he bought in Fernando Torres, a classy but still raw forward: he would turn him into one of the finest strikers in the world. In previous seasons at, he had brought in Jose Manuel Reina, Daniel Agger and Dirk Kuyt, three excellent players.
Liverpool FC's Season 2008 - Fernando Torres Rivals Ian Rush As Liverpool Football Club LFC's Greatest Ever Striker
In 2008, the Liverpool FC team performed quite well in the league and reached the Champions League semi-final, but alas there were no trophies on the horizon. Fernando Torres had an amazing season in the league though, scoring goals for fun and was only bettered by an excellent Didier Drogba.
2009 - Record No. Of Points For Liverpool FC In The Barclays Premier League
In 2009, the work that Rafael Benitez had been doing with the Liverpool FC team paid off handsomely. They played like an unbeatable team and indeed, they only lost 2 times in the league and were unlucky not to win the title with 86 points. In the later part of the season, Liverpool FC crushed other teams. It was a magnificent season, and they only lacked trophies to show for it. Rafa had shown what he can do, given time, but this would be ignored by many. Others would quickly forget it.
2010 - Rafael Benitez's First Poor Season At Liverpool FC
Note: Liverpool FC Finished 7th In The League. This was considered a poor season back then. Now after Roy Hodgson catastrophic Liverpool FC premiership football reign, 7th place seems disappointing but acceptable.
In 2010, for the first time at Liverpool Football Club, Rafa had a poor season. For the 1st time in his tenure, they failed to qualify for the Champions League. Instead of being given more time, he was forced out of the club. Here, they booted out a man who had a history of always coming back stronger in face of adversity. If only he had been given 1 more season to prove his worth, like Gerrard Houllier had been given. He has a poor season and there was no excuse for that, but to force him out of the club was harsh and stupid. But by then, Hicks did not need him anymore. His most potent enemy at the club, Rick Parry, had already been removed.
So Hicks stepped aside and invited Christian Purslow, the inept football chief executive at the club, to push Rafa out. Rafa left a very good Liverpool FC team, with 2 of the best players in the world in Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. The team also included world class players like Mascherano and Pepe Reina, and excellent players like Daniel Agger, Kuyt and Alberto Aquilani.

A Sad Day For Liverpool FC - Rafa Benitez Dismissal & Roy Hodgson Appointment
Rafael Benitez was replaced by Roy Hodgson at Liverpool Fooball Club LFC, a good manager for a small team, but a bad manager for a big team. Results that followed proved it. He failed to get the best out of his players, and instead of questioning his methods, he questioned the players' qualities. It is to be reminded that Roy Hodgson had never been successful at a big club in the past. His speciality had been to take small clubs and make them hard to beat.

Hi Chris, that's a pretty comprehensive site you have put together. I'm a Wolves fan but football fan too, so i can appreciate how frustrating it must be watching the pool struggle. I don't think Kenny is the answer, only new players will improve your situation, but it could be worse. You could have twenty years in the championship like Wolves. Good luck in the future. I'll have a look at the videos when i have more time as i'm off to work. Cheers mate.
Liverpool forever! Keep up the good work! You'll never walk alone! Cheers! =)
I saw Liverpool at Wolves for the first time in the mid sixties. They came out of the tunnel wearing their all blood red kit and my heart sank down to my ankles. They beat us 2-0 that day. I also went to Anfield when Alun Evans played for us as a nineteen year old. He was clean through on goal when the Liverpool goalie came out of the area and flattened him. The game ended 0-0. Then Liverpool signed Evans for a British record transfer fee of 100,000 quid. Not the best signing they ever made though. Maybe Kenny will just see out this season whilst they find a more suitable manager, like Mick Mcarthy. Only kidding. Cheers mate and good luck this week at the shrine against Wolves.
Hey, great hub man. Just can't wait til we get some new players. Poor Torres can't do it be himself. Hopefully we land a big named player before January. The last 2 seasons have been absolutely horrible. Ever since that stupid beach ball incident LOL!!!! Man when are we gonna win the premiership????????????
Hey, we finally won!!! Man it's been so long! 3-0, Mireles seems like a good find. Yea, Suarez will be a bit of a risk I reckon. I know he played good at the World cup for Uruguay but I don't know...feel a bit nervous about it.
Anyways let's enjoy this rare victory!!
Nice hub man! Great work! Keep up the Job. True red.
